Dojang Etiquette
For Students
- Bow when entering or leaving the Dojang, showing respect for the place where we build our mind, body and spirit.
- Address all Master Instructors and Black Belts by their last names, as in “Master Whang” or “Sabomnim Lim” and “Mr. Petersen”. Answer all questions by “Yes, sir” or “Yes, ma’am”. Junior students should display the same respect to all parents and adults.
- Always wear a clean West Side Taekwondo uniform while training in the Dojang. Wash your uniforms!
- Treat your uniforms and belts with respect – they symbolize the sweat, tears and effort in your training.
- No loud talking, running around, playing or chewing gum in the Dojang.
- Avoid wearing jewelry in class for your own safety and the safety of your fellow students. Absolutely no large, dangling earrings or chains should be worn during class.
- Never interrupt a class in progress. If you are late for a class, ask for permission from the instructor before you enter the class.
- Shoes (other than those designed specifically for martial arts) are not permitted in the matted areas.
- Take responsibility for your belongings. Clothes, gear, shoes and other personal effects left behind will be donated to goodwill unless reclaimed in a timely manner.
- For students through high school – you must submit your report card with your application to test. School age students are expected to maintain a “B” average before being allowed to test for Black Belt.
For Parents and Guardians:
- Turn off the ringer on your phone. For phone conversations, please step outside.
- No unattended children in the lobby. If your non-student child is making excessive noise, please take him/her outside if class is in session.
- No pets (other than seeing-eye dogs) are allowed in the Dojang or lobby.
- Food and drinks are allowed in the front lobby area only.
- Pick up your children in within 15 minutes of the end of class – late pick-ups will be assessed babysitting fees of $20/hour.
- Do not leave valuables unattended. West Side Taekwondo is not responsible for lost or stolen items.
