We bow to the American flag to show respect to our homeland. For almost all of us, at one point in history this is the land that we or our ancestors chose to come to because of the things it represents - freedom, opportunity. Honoring our flag reminds us that we live in a certain society of people and enjoy the many benefits they offer. But along with freedom and opportunity come responsibility - to obey the laws of that society and do those things we can to make it an even better place. We also bow to the Korean flag, to recognize the birthplace of Taekwondo. It is a country half way across the world, but it has given us an art that enriches our lives here.

Meaning of the Green BeltThe green belt symbolizes the young plant beginning to grow.

Interim Grading for Children. For each belt, five stripes must be earned, each stripe representing the key elements of each grade. There are no formal tests for the interim grades, and you can ask a kyobumnim to test you any time. You must have passed each of the interim grades to be permitted to test for the next belt.* For pushups, arms must go beyond a 90 degree angle. For crunches, shoulder blades must come off the floor.

+ For squats, knees must be bent at beyond 90 degree angle.
